With the battle over H.R. 1488, the gun ban repeal bill, ready to begin in the U.S. House, you can be sure President Clinton will be calling in chits and twisting arms in an effort to de-rail the repeal express! In just one week, Congress will reconvene in Washington, D.C., and at the top of their agenda is gun ban repeal! That's why it's critical for you to meet with your legislators at home and encourage them to support H.R. 1488! Let's make sure the legislators who got your support at the polls last November give you their support on the House floor this May! FINAL HEARING BEFORE HOUSE SUBCOMMITTEE SCHEDULED. On Tuesday, May 2nd, the House Subcommittee on Crime will hold its third and final hearing on the Second Amendment. This third hearing will focus on enforcing gun laws against violent criminals. Members in the area are encouraged to attend this hearing, scheduled for 10:00 a.m., in room 2237 of the Rayburn House Office Building. We'll keep you apprised of any schedule changes. A LOOK AT THE STATES: Arizona: NRA-ILA Executive Director Tanya Metaksa will speak before the Firearms Action Committee Tucson (FACT) on Friday, April 21st. Her speech will focus on gun ban repeal efforts in the U.S. Congress, and the grassroots successes of law-abiding gun owners in the states. Members in the area are encouraged to attend the meeting, scheduled for Friday evening at 7:30 p.m., at the Masonic Temple, 1944 East Allen Road in Tucson. Colorado: On Monday, April 24, SWARM (Safety for Women and Responsible Motherhood) is holding a rally in Denver in support of right to carry reform. NRA members are encouraged to attend Monday's rally, which begins at 8:30 a.m. in the Capitol Building cafeteria. HB 1084, right to carry legislation, passed the House and Senate & has been referred to a conference committee where they will work out the differences between the two chambers' versions of the bill. NRA-ILA and state activists are working with the conferees to ensure the bill best protects your right to self- defense. Illinois: Next week, the Senate will vote on SB 1129, a right to carry bill, and the House will vote on HB 568, state firearms preemption legislation. Members: please call your State Senators & urge them to support SB 1129 AND call your State Representatives and encourage them to support HB 568. Louisiana: The Senate passed SB 886, the Citizen's Right to Carry Bill, with amendments deleting the $25,000 bond requirement. The bill now goes to the House Administration of Criminal Justice Committee for consideration. On Thursday, April 27, the House Criminal Justice Committee will hold hearings on gun-related bills, including the House version of right to carry reform and a measure requiring you to obtain a permit to purchase ammunition. NRA members are encouraged to attend the hearing at 9:00 a.m. in House Committee Room #6 at the State Capitol in Baton Rouge. Members throughout the state: please call your State Representatives at 342-6945 and urge them to support right to carry reform, and oppose all "gun control" proposals. Missouri: SB 176, right to carry legislation, passed out of the House Judiciary Committee with the referendum requirement attached. The bill will be considered on the House floor next week, at which time a substitute bill will be offered by Rep. Wayne Crump which does not contain the referendum language. Members: please call your State Representatives & urge them to support Rep. Crump's substitute bill for SB 176. North Carolina: HB 90, right to carry legislation, will likely be considered in the House Finance Committee on Tuesday, April 25. If it passes out of committee, it could come up for a House floor vote by the end of the week. Work continues on getting the best possible language in the bill to protect your right to self- defense. Members: please call your State Representatives and urge them to support HB 90. SB 356, the Senate version of right to carry legislation, will be considered by the Senate Judiciary I Committee on Tuesday, April 25. Member are encouraged to attend the hearing at 10:00 a.m in Room 1124 of the State Capitol Building in Raleigh and to contact their State Senators and urge them to support SB 356. South Carolina: HB 3730, NRA-supported right to carry reform legislation, passed the House Judiciary Committee and now is awaiting a House floor vote. Members: please call your State Representatives and urge them to support HB 3730. Texas: Action on SB 60, NRA-backed right to carry legislation, will be considered by the full House next week. Amendments may still be offered which would put its passage at risk, including a requirement that the issue be placed on the ballot for voter approval and a tremendous increase in the number of training hours to qualify for a permit. Members: please call your State Representatives and urge them to support SB 60 without any gutting amendments! Washington: HB 1152, a bill which calls for a reduction of the concealed pistol license fee increases, has passed both the House and Senate. The House will soon vote on whether to accept Senate amendments to the bill. We'll keep you posted!
