Starting Sunday, October 15, from 8:00 p.m.-10:00 p.m. e.s.t., NRA Executive Vice President Wayne LaPierre will take to the airwaves of the NBC Radio Network for two hours of unedited, undistorted and undiluted talk about guns, crime and freedom. With the help of a host of special guests, Wayne will dispel the myths, quell the rumors and answer our critics in an open forum. The show is being offered by NBC on a trial basis, so only a modest number of the 300 independently-owned NBC radio stations will air Sunday's program. In order to ensure a permanent national broadcast, we must show NBC that there is a strong base of audience support for this program. Members: please consult your local yellow pages under "Radio," locate the NBC radio station in your area, then contact the station manager and urge him to air the "Wayne LaPierre Show." Call today and tune in on Sunday! NRA-BACKED AMENDMENTS STILL ALIVE IN CONGRESS: The U.S. Senate did not take action this week on key government appropriations bills that contain two NRA-supported amendments. This gives us a little extra time to put some pressure on our Senators to support these two measures -- the Smith Amendment and the Istook/McIntosh Amendment (see Fax Alert Vol. 2, No. 44). These amendments seek to level the playing field for groups like NRA-ILA -- whose pro-Second Amendment stand has been under attack for years by organizations and study groups that are heavily funded by taxpayer dollars. As you know, NRA-ILA receives no taxpayer dollars at all! We must fund our lobbying activities and studies through the generous contributions of our members. These Amendments make sure that other groups have to do so as well. Members: please contact your U.S. Senators and urge them to take up the appropriations bills & support the Smith Amendment and the Istook/McIntosh Amendment! Your Senators can be reached by calling (202) 224-3121. CO-SPONSOR LIST IS GROWING: Due in large part to your efforts and Representative Bob Barr's (R-Ga.) recent changes to the bill, H.R. 1488 -- legislation to repeal President Clinton's 1994 gun and magazine ban -- picked up new co-sponsors this week, but we still have a long way to go! Help spread the word throughout your community and encourage your family, friends and fellow club members to contact their U.S. Representatives and urge them to sign on and support H.R. 1488! For a fact sheet with more information on the proposed changes to H.R. 1488, please call NRA-ILA at 1-800- 392-8683. A LOOK AT THE STATES: Ohio: On Tuesday, October 17, the House Judiciary Committee will hear opponent-only testimony on SB 68, right to carry legislation. The hearing is scheduled for 10:00 a.m. in Room G4 of the Departments Bldg, 65 So. Front Street in Columbus. Members are encouraged to attend to show support for the measure. Also, please contact your State Representatives & urge them to support SB 68. And keep the pressure on Governor Voinovich! Call his office at (614) 644-0813 and urge him to sign SB 68 into law when it reaches his desk! Pennsylvania: This week, the State Police sent letters to licensed dealers reporting rules for implementation of the Sportsmen's Omnibus Crime law. Many of the rules listed, however, were not in accordance with the new law, including what appeared to be a requirement that purchasers of rifles and shotguns go through the same 48-hour waiting period as handgun purchasers until the instant check system gets up and running. NRA-ILA contacted Gov. Ridge, who stepped in to ensure that a new letter is sent to dealers that accurately outlines the rules for implementing the law. For a summary of the law, please call NRA-ILA at 1-800-392-8683. Also, a wide range of NRA-supported technical amendments to clarify language in the law are being drafted and will be offered in the legislature. Stay tuned! Wisconsin: On Wednesday, October 18, the Senate Judiciary Committee will hold a hearing on SJR 7, a proposed right to keep and bear arms amendment to the state constitution. Members are encouraged to attend the hearing at 9:00 a.m. in Room 421 South of the State Capitol in Madison. Also, please contact your State Senators at 1- 800-362-9472 and urge them to support SJR 7. GRASSROOTS GEARING UP IN MARYLAND: On Saturday, November 11, NRA- ILA will host a special seminar at the Best Western Venice Inn in Hagerstown. This FREE seminar will discuss all aspects of the anti-gun measures proposed by Governor Glendening's Commission on Gun Violence, and how we can work together to defeat further restrictions on our freedoms. Don't miss this opportunity to hear from lawmakers and NRA leaders, and meet fellow NRA members who are committed to protecting freedom in Maryland! For more information on this seminar, please call the NRA-ILA at 1-800-392-8683. =+=+=+=+ This information is provided as a service of the National Rifle Association Institute for Legislative Action, Fairfax, VA.
