[If you can't personnaly attend, I urge you to call your local House of Reps members to let them know it's going on & to urge them to attend and participate. This is especially true of the newly elected, who need to learn why we put them in office. -- Jeff C.] __ Date: Tue, 28 Mar 1995 23:28:44 -0500 From: alerts@gatekeeper.nra.org (NRA Alerts) To: firearms-alert@shell.portal.com Subject: ALERT: Congressional Hearing on Self-Defense and the Second Amendment March 28, 1995 Congressional Hearing on Self-Defense and the Second Amendment On Friday, March 31st, the U.S. House Subcommittee on Crime will host the first of three hearings on the Second Amendment. This hearing represents the first time in nearly ten years that Second Amendment advocates will represent our case before a panel dominated by pro-gun lawmakers. This hearing will focus on the right to self-defense, and the need to protect this right. The hearing is scheduled for 9:30am, Friday morning, on Capitol Hill. IT IS IMPORTANT THAT NRA MEMBERS AND GUN OWNERS ATTEND THIS HISTORIC HEARING TO SHOW THEIR SUPPORT FOR OUR RIGHT TO KEEP AND BEAR ARMS AND OUR FUNDAMENTAL RIGHT TO SELF-DEFENSE. The hearing will be located at 2141 Rayburn House Office Building on Capitol Hill. The hearing should last about two hours. Please encourage your family, friends and fellow gun owners to attend as well. We're expecting heavy media coverage as well as numerous "gun control" supporters -- so the more pro-Second Amendment attendees the better. Metaksa Executive Director National Rifle Association/ILA 11250 Waples Mill Road Fairfax, VA 22030 Dear Tanya, I am happy to take a moment to let you know of our progress on the Firearms Legislation Task Force. Specifically, we are making important headway in pulling together different legislative proposals and ideas, and we have established dates for our initial round of hearings. With respect to the hearings and in conjunction with the House Judiciary Crime Subcommittee, under Bill McCollum's leadership, the following dates have been set aside: First Hearing - Friday, March 31st Second Hearing - Wednesday, April 5 Third Hearing - First Week in May As soon as we have other details such as room numbers, I will be in touch. As always, please feel free to call me at any time. We welcome your input as we refocus our efforts on the real issue, the use of firearms by criminals and away from the rights of law abiding citizens to keep and bear arms. With warmest regards, I am, Sincerely Bob Barr Chairman Firearms Legislation Task Force P.S. Tanya, please note the attached memo I just received from the Crime Subcommittee. ********************************************************************* It is time for us all to do at least the following 4 things: 1. Write Congressmen McCollum and Barr and thank them for their efforts in our behalf. 2. Write your OWN Congressman and tell him about the hearings and ask that he/she request to speak at the hearings on your behalf. Then let us know what kind of response that you get. 3. Get this information out to as many people as possible! 4. Write letters to the editor about the hearings and get the media involved in publicizing the hearings from our point of view. If you have other ideas please share! _____ End.
