Subject: Wayne LaPierre on USA TODAY gun poll

June 1, 1994

I recently had the opportunity to look over the complete
results on the gun survey conducted by the Gallup organization from
Dec. 17-21, 1993, for USA TODAY ("Gun owners back controls," Dec.
30 -Jan. 2, News).
I am curious why USA TODAY did not print complete results
which would have provided a more balanced view of guns.
For instance, why didn't you mention that while 67% of
respondents agreed there should be more gun control laws, the
number actually decreased when compared with results from a
September 1990 Gallup survey?
That survey showed 78% of Americans agreed there should be
more gun laws.
Why didn't you mention that in a span of three years support
for more gun laws fell by 13%? Better still, why not report that the
number of people who think there should be less gun-control laws
increased from 19% to 32% in a span of three years?
The trend analysis indicates to me that, for the more relevant
past decade, not only is there no new groundswell for gun control but
support for such measures is in decline.
On the front page, you were quick to point out that 80% of gun
owners oppose a handgun ban and only half of non-gun owners oppose
such a ban.
Why not report that 60% of all respondents oppose a ban on
handguns?
While appearing to be balanced and objective in your series on
guns, you achieved neither.
Your selective use of polling results leads me to believe you
have no interest in focusing on the true cause of the problem with
crime in America - the criminals.
I can only assume that USA TODAY`s decision not to publish
complete poll results was an attempt to manage rather than report
the news.
