Suter" Subject: CRIME BILL UPDATE To: Jeff Chan As of 4:50 EDT the Democrats feel they have the votes to pass the rule and the crime bill. They will be voting shortly to return the bill to Conference committee. The "Gephardt Compromise," besides reductions in pork, makes the following changes in the gun ban provisions: 1) instead of "sunset" in 10 years, the ban would sunset in 5 years - unless re-enacted. 2) only the "19" will be banned at the outset. Subsequent additions to the banned list under the "cosmetic" criteria would require Congressional action. 3) though there is no increase in magazine capacity (from 10) for new production magazines, old (capacity >10) magazines would not be treated as firearms. The Democrats' goal is to have the Conference committee meet, accept the Gephardt Compromise, and to have the full crime bill ready on the House floor for a vote by NOON SATURDAY! ************************************************************************* * Edgar A.
