                   **** STATE (California) NEWS ****

AB 1333 (Gotch) - The seized firearm destruction bill was not voted on
today in the Senate. The obvious reason is that Hayden/Gotch didn't
have the votes. The only Senator who wasn't present was Alquist
(D-San Jose). Please call his district office at 408/286-8318 today
or tomorrow and urge a *NO* vote. Please keep up the pressure on the
swing votes we identified in yesterday's fax alert.

AB X37 (Willie Brown/John Burton) - We have received information that
this bill will come to a vote on the Assembly Floor on Monday, April
11. The bill would allow cities and counties to ban *any semi-
automatic firearm*. This is going to be a very tough bill to vote
against for some of the Democrats who support us because of Speaker
Brown`s involvement. Please call the listed Assembly members and urge
them to vote *NO* or *abstain*:

  Joe Baca (D-Rialto) - 916/44507454
  Julie Bornstein (D-Palm Desert - 916/445-5416
  Debra Bowen (D-Marina Del Rey) - 916/445-8528
  Cruz Bustamente (D-Fresno) - 916/445-8514
  Robert Campbell (D-Martinez) - 916/445-7890
  Sal Cannella (D-Ceres) - 916/445-8570
  Tom Connolly (D-Lemon Grove) - 916/445-3266
  Dominic Cortese (D-San Jose) - 916/445-8243
  Jim Costa (D-Fresno) - 916/445-7558
  Bob Epple (D-Long Beach) - 916/445-6047
  Tom Hannigan (D-Fairfield) - 916/445-8368
  Dan Hauser (D-Arcata) - 916/445-8360
  Johan Klehs (D-San Leandro) - 916/445-8160
  Bruce McPherson (R-Santa Cruz) - 916/445-8496
  Margaret Snyder (D-Modesto) - 916/445-7906
  Curtis Tucker (D-Inglewood) - 916/445-7533

AB X37 would create a nightmare for law enforcement and consequently
does not have the support of the Attorney General, the police chiefs
or sheriffs.

SB 1275 and 1276 (Hart) were approved by the Senate Judiciary
Committee this week (both by one vote). SB 1275 would require a
state license to purchase a handgun and SB 1276 would require a state
license to purchase ammunition. SB 1276 also had the
Schumer/Metzenbaum "arsenal" language. An arsenal was defined as 25
handguns or 1000 rounds of ammunition. The ammunition language was
amended out. President Pro Tem Lockyer spoke and voted against both
bills. Please call him at 916/445-6671 and thank him for his support.

AB 3499 (O'Connell) was amended and passed by the Assembly Public
Safety Committee. Initially, it would have prohibited a minor from
possessing a firearm unless they were accompanied by or had written
permission from the parent/guardian. As amended, the bill now only
deals with penalties for illegal possession of firearms by minors.
The new twist is loss of driving privileges and community service.

ANOTHER BIG WIN FOR SAN DIEGO "GRASS ROOTS"

You'll probably see this story in your local paper. Russ Grisbeck is
a 12-year-old San Diego reloader/shooter. Russ earned an "A" for his
science project which involved an accuracy/reloading evaluation of
.30-'06 ammunition. His project was deemed unsafe by the San Diego
Union-Tribune-dominated review committee and he was to be barred from
further competition. After an "attitude adjustment" by enraged "grass
roots" members, political correctness surrendered to "pain avoidance".
A big "atta boy" to Russ, his dad and everyone who supported him!
