                       *** STATE (California) NEWS ***

Next week is critical! Friday, June 3rd, is the last day to pass some
house bills. Some bills are on "suspense" in a fiscal committee and
others are on the Assembly or Senate floor.

ASSEMBLY:

AB 2865 (Lee), AB X37 (Burton & W. Brown) and AB 2706 (Caldera)
These are all bills that would eliminate state preemption over gun
laws and allow local government to pass anti-gun bills.

AB 2469 (Burton) and AB X132 (Katz) - Would increase the penalties
for illegally carrying a concealed firearm.

AB 2517 (Umberg) - Would increase the penalty if a minor gains access
to a firearm without the parents permission and
                    carries it off premises.

AB 2546 (Polanco) - Would ban caseless ammunition.

AB 3210 (T. Friedman) - Would ban the sale of handguns in California
after 1-1-95 and would impose a $200 tax on
                         EVERY handgun you own.

AB 3410 (B. Friedman) - Would require the licensing of firearm
dealers by the Department of Justice.

AB 2517 and AB 3210 are on suspense in the Assembly Ways and Means
Committee. If they are approved by the Ways and Means Committee, they
will move IMMEDIATELY to the Assembly Floor.

SENATE:

SB 1275 (Hart) - Would require a license from the Department of
                  Justice to purchase a handgun.

SB 1276 (Hart) - Would require a license from the Department of
                  Justice to purchase ammunition.

SB 1277 (Hart) - Would prohibit anyone but a peace officer from
purchasing more than one handgun in a 30-day period.

SB 1293 (Hayden) - Would repeal state preemption.

SB 1294 (Hayden) - Would increase the penalty for carrying a concealed
                    weapon.

SB 1896 (Petris) - Would prohibit 18-21 year olds from possessing a
handgun if they didn't live with their parents. It
would also subject the victim of a burglary to a
$500 file if the firearms wasn't in a safe or
chained to a residence at the time it was stolen.
You can thank Attorney General Lungren for this
                    idea!

SB X37 (Roberti) - Would prohibit people in prohibited classes from
                    possessing ammunition, magazines, etc.

SB X46 (Roberti) - Would add Senator Feinstein's generic description
of assault weapon to the Roberti-Roos Assault
Weapon Control Act, thereby adding many new
                    firearms to the "banned" list.

SB 1275, 1276, and 1294 are still on suspense in the Senate
Appropriations Committee. If passed, these bills will also move
quickly to the Senate Floor.

It is essential that, on Tuesday morning, May 31, you "light up" the
phones in the capitol. We need to keep the pressure on until Friday
afternoon.
