*** STATE (California) NEWS ***

LEGISLATIVE ACTIVITY THIS WEEK

Senator Hart's SB 1275 and 1276 were not heard by the Senate Judiciary
Committee. SB 1275 would create a state license requirement before
someone could purchase a handgun and SB 1276 would impose a similar
requirement for ammunition. We don't know why Senator Hart pulled the
bills off file.

Assemblyman Burton's AB 2469 was moved to "suspense" by the Ways and
Means Committee. AB 2469 would increase the penalty for carrying a
concealed weapon to a "wobbler" if proper ammunition was present and
the weapon is not registered to the suspect in the DOJ computer
system. The bill was moved to "suspense" because of its potential
costs. We don't expect anything else to happen with the bill until
the state budget is signed in June or July.

ROBERTI PRESS CONFERENCE - "MASS MURDER AMMUNITION CLIPS"

Senator Roberti held a press conference today concerning SB 1128. He
said the bill lacks 5 or 6 votes for passage. He did not mention any
proposed amendments. The press turnout was small and the interest
level low. Please keep calling to let your Assembly Members know that
you want SB 1128 defeated.

20TH SENATE DISTRICT CANDIDATES' FORUM

On Wednesday, March 30, 1994 at 7 p.m., the NRA will host a
candidates' forum at the Airtel Plaza Hotel, 7277 Valjean Avenue, Van
Nuys. All candidates have been invited to participate. A mailing is
going to thousands of NRA members in the district. Bring your spouse,
neighbors and friends but come early -- there are only 500 seats.

STOCKTON CITY COUNCIL

On Monday, March 21, 1994, some members of the Stockton City Council
tried to pass a motion to support the creation of an anti-gun task
force. Their ultimate objective was passage of local gun control
measures. The proposal failed. Instead we helped to create an anti-
crime task force and we expect NRA members will be major contributors.

Thanks goes out to all the NRA members that called the council and
packed the council chambers. Once again the "grass roots" came out on
top.
