California:

Two more anti-gun bills have died since the legislature went
back into session on Monday: Upon reconsideration, Assembly Bill
132X, Rep. Katz's bill that would increase the penalty for carrying
a firearm concealed without a permit under certain circumstances,
again fell short of the 41 votes (absolute majority) needed for
passage. This time the vote was 36-30; the bill had already failed
earlier in the week on a 37-30 vote. Also, the Assembly Ways and
Means Committee killed Senate bill 822, which would require the
destruction of seized firearms by law enforcement authorities.

In Lafayette, California, the City Council wants to use their
local zoning authority to ban the sale of firearms by licensed
dealers in any area not zoned for commercial business. It is
critical that you attend the Council meeting at 6:30 p.m. on
Monday, August 22, at 500 St. Mary's Road in Lafayette to show your
opposition to this proposal. Call the City Council at (510) 284-
1968 after 4:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 18, to verify the time and
agenda of the August 22 meeting.

Earlier this year, the Council passed a resolution calling for
bans on semi-automatic firearms and ammunition, as well as allowing
any local governing body to restrict your Second Amendment rights
in any way that they choose. That resolution and this proposed
zoning ordinance are the first steps in an all-out local assault on
your rights!

Fight back by calling your City Council members and urging
them to oppose this ordinance. Make plans to attend the August 22
City Council meeting with fellow gun owners. For more information
locally, contact Bill Maggiora at (510) 284-7848/(707) 646-4878 or
Ed Worley, NRA Grassroots Coordinator, at (916) 446-2455.
