                   ***STATE (California) NEWS ***

                           MORE GOOD NEWS

Last week, we told you that SB 1896 (Petris) and SB 1277 (Hart) had
been given a rule waiver and granted reconsideration. We subsequently
met with Senator Petris and he told us that he intends to "drop"
SB 1896. Today, Senator Hart brought SB 1277 to a vote. This is the
one gun per month "Virginia style" bill. Senators Boatwright and
Johannessen spoke forcefully against the bill during the floor debate.
Handgun Control, Inc. was aggressively working SB 1277 but when the
"dust had cleared" the vote was 14 "AYE" and 21 "NO".

     AYE NO NOT VOTING
    Alquist Bergeson Craven
    Ayala Beverly Hayden
    Campbell Boatwright Hill
    Dills Calderon Peace (Absent)
    Hart Greene Torres
    Hughes Hurtt
    Johnston Johannessen
    Killea Kelley
    Lockyer Kopp
    Marks Leonard
    Petris Leslie
    Roberti Lewis
    Rosenthal Maddy
    Watson McCorquodale
                    Mello
                    Presley
                    Rogers
                    Russell
                    Thompson
                    Wright
                    Wyman

As you can see, we picked up some uncommon supporters in Senators
Greene, Calderon and Kopp. Please call the Senators who voted "NO"
and thank them.

AB 1818 (Gotch) is now set to be heard in the Senate Judiciary
Committee on June 28, 1994. The bill would require that all
semiautomatic handguns built in California be equipped with a loaded
chamber indicator.

AB X37 (W. Brown & Burton) - Assemblyman Burton told us today that
he will bring up the bill for a vote on the Assembly Floor in one to
two weeks. AB X37 would overturn state preemption for firearm laws.
Please ask your Assemblymember to vote "NO".
