Overnight Update From Gun Owners of America

Your calls are working. If Bill Clinton is blaming the NRA
for stopping the crime bill, then that means Congress is hearing from
lots of gun owners. Take a bow.

As you know, Clinton has asked that supporters of the crime
bill make lots of calls this weekend and Monday. I think we should
surprise them. Make a call to your Congressman and Senators' district
offices today (Saturday) and then call their Washington offices Monday
morning. Get five others to do likewise. Our calls must substantially
outnumber what Clinton is trying to generate.

You folks in Mississippi have a special assignment. Senator
Trent Lott was heard saying "I'm not sure how I'm going to vote" on
Bill Clinton's crime bill. Perhaps Senator Lott has not heard from
his constituents. You can call Senator Lott at (202) 224-6253 and/or
fax him at (202) 224-2262.

Second Amendment Rally Set to Go
-- Come lobby with GOA and visit our hospitality suite

I hope you guys are planning to come to the Second Amendment
rally in Washington, D.C. on Sunday, August 14. The rally will
be held at the Lincoln Memorial from 10:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. If
you are interested in taking a bus to Washington, call
1-803-269-7055 for available bus information.

If you will be here on Thursday (8/11) or Friday (8/12), let us
know so you can come lobby with us on Capitol Hill. (Call
Dennis Fusaro at 703-321-8585). The crime bill is not a done
deal, so your legislators could use a personal visit from
constituents inside their districts!

If you are here by Saturday (8/13), you can come visit Gun
Owners of America in our hospitality suite at the Crystal City
Marriott in Arlington, Virginia. (Do not confuse this with the
Crystal Gateway Marriott which is also in Arlington.) When you
get to the Crystal City Marriott, just go one floor above the
lobby level and ask for the GOA hospitality suite or look for
the signs. Here is the date, time and location of the
hospitality suite:

           Saturday, August 13, 1994

             Crystal City Marriott

              GOA's Front-Line Update:
We're winning the battle; but the war is far from over

              by Gun Owners of America

(August 6, 1994) -- Sources on Capitol Hill have told GOA that
the crime bill could be headed back to the conference committee
for more work. On the other hand, sources say it is also
possible that the bill could come up for a vote on Tuesday or
Wednesday of next week. To be honest, no one really knows what
is going to happen. What is known, is that the Democratic
leadership does not have enough votes to pass the bill right
now. (Vote counters place them 20-40 votes shy of passage.)

President Clinton is blaming the gun rights community for
holding up the crime bill. Apparently, the phones in the
offices of certain Representatives -- especially conservative
Democrats -- have been ringing off the hook. To counter this,
Clinton has been telephoning swing legislators and is now asking
the American people to "ask Congress over the weekend" to
support the crime bill.

Well folks, you know what to do. Go ahead and call the House
over the weekend (202-225-3121). We can make sure that by
Monday, plenty of calls have come in -- AGAINST the crime bill.

Sources on Capitol Hill have told GOA that there could be as
many as 40 Democrats who are refusing to support a crime bill
because of the gun ban. GOA is convinced that this is due to
the calls and letters you guys have generated. Only weeks ago,
few legislators would even consider voting against the crime
bill because of the gun ban.

As an example, one GOA member told us last Friday (7/29) that
Rep. Gene Green (D-TX) was saying he would support the crime
bill -- even with the gun ban in it. But after you guys deluged
his office with phone calls for a week, he is now having second
thoughts. One press report (on Friday, 8/5) stated Green "is
being inundated with calls from gun owners urging him to block
the assault weapons ban." As a result, Green is now telling
supporters of the crime bill that it's going to be hard for him
to support the bill. After all, he says, "the people against
the assault rifle ban are so vocal and so strong." Way to go
guys! Don't let up on him. You can reach Rep. Green at ph)
202-225-1688 and fax) 202-225-9903.

     RANDOM SHOTS:

     * You will remember that a couple of days ago, we reported that
John Dingell -- a Democratic Congressman from Michigan and an
NRA Board Member -- was planning to support efforts to get the
crime bill to the floor for a vote. Many of you have called his
office and confirmed this to be true. However, many of you have
also discovered Dingell's office to be quite rude. One person
told us that he had called Dingell's office, only to have them
hang up on him when they determined that he was not from
Dingell's district. In fact, every report we have received
indicates that Dingell's office does not care about your opinion
if you live outside of the district.

Perhaps you can call Dingell back and remind him that as an NRA
Board Member, he had better be interested in what you think.
After all, he must rely upon your vote if he wants to retain his
board member status. Other callers have used a different tact
with Dingell. They have told Dingell's office that even though
they don't live in the district, they can still give money to
Dingell's opponent -- or to running an ad in Shotgun News
detailing Dingell's betrayal of gun owners. Another caller
informed Dingell's office that he is going to a gun show in
Dingell's district this weekend to spill the beans on Dingell.
If Dingell wants to hear from people in his district, he will
after the weekend is over.

You can reach Rep. Dingell at ph) 202-225-4071 and fax)
202-225-4637.

     * Here are fax numbers for three "conservative" Democrats for
whom we previously had no numbers. They should be encouraged to
break with their party leadership and support gun owners' rights:

1. Rep. Peter DeFazio (D-OR) -- fax) 202-225-9477 and
   202-225-0373
2. Rep. Michael Andrews (D-TX) -- fax) 202-225-2045 ? (this
   line never picks up)
3. Rep. William Orton (D-UT) -- fax) 202-226-7683

     * Here are three legislators who are supporting the crime bill
-- and shouldn't be:

1. Rep. Jim Ramstad (R-MN) -- ph) 202-225-2871 and fax)
   202-225-6351
2. Rep. David Minge (D-MN) -- ph) 202-225-2331 and fax)
   202-226-0836
3. Rep. James Talent (R-MO) -- ph) 202-225-2561 and fax)
   202-225-2563
