We need to keep getting others to call their Representatives (202-225-3121). The House leadership has been postponing the vote on the crime bill to find time to twist more arms. The vote could now come up either Friday or next week. The Washington Times also reported today that Rep. Bill Richardson (D-NM) -- supposedly a pro-gun advocate -- is twisting Democrats' arms to get the crime bill passed. Let's deluge his office with calls and faxes and let him know what you think about his betrayal. You can call Rep. Richardson at 202-225-6190, and fax him at 202-226-2160. Also, Rep. John Dingell (D-MI) -- an NRA Board Member -- is saying he will vote in favor of the rule on the crime bill. This means that he would vote "yes" on allowing the crime bill to come to the floor for a vote. Mr. Dingell also needs to hear from you. Dingell's office may try to tell you that they want a clean vote on the crime bill, and so they will vote to bring the bill to the floor. Tell them that voting "no" on the rule is the best way to kill the bill because many crime bill supporters -- like the Black Caucus -- are also opposing the rule. You can use a quote by John Dingell himself: "If you let me write procedure and I let you write substance, I'll screw you every time" -- quoted in Politics in America: 1994 (p. 800). Procedural votes are important. We need Dingell's "no" vote to prevent the crime bill from coming to the floor. It is THE best chance we have of killing the bill in the House. His office might also try to tell you that the crime bill is not so bad because it has a hunter harassment protection and a waiver -- under the Brady law -- for those who pawn their guns at a pawn shop. While these are small improvements, they are hardly a fair exchange for a gun ban. Tell them that there is no acceptable compromise for a gun ban. Tell them, "Do not compromise at all. Do not swallow a gun ban. NO MORE GUN CONTROL!" You can call Rep. Dingell at 202-225-4071, and fax him at 202-225-4637. Also, sources inside Capitol Hill tell us that Rep. Jack Brooks is pushing Rep. Dingell to support the rule on the crime bill. If he's pushing Dingell, that means he's pushing other Democrats as well. We need to deluge Mr. Brooks' office once again. Tell him to get off the crime bill. (Some of you have already warned Brooks that there may be a full page ad in Shotgun News coming soon to document Brooks' betrayal. Perhaps his office would be interested to know that you'll be contributing money to help run that ad in other papers as well?) You can call Rep. Brooks at 202-225-6565. Fax him at 202-225-1584 and 225-1958. Our hats are off to a GOA member who provided us with the fax numbers for the conservative Democrats that need to hear from you. All the numbers begin with "202-225" or "202-226."
