GOA Update:

Good news on Senator Hank Brown. A Ram-Line officer informs me
that not only is Ram-Line solidly against the gun ban in the crime bill,
but that Hank Brown has been converted to our cause. (Brown voted for
the ban last November.) Your calls do matter. No need to call Ram-Line
any more.

GOA Overnight Update:

Floor debate in the Senate today demonstrated that
your efforts are paying off. Sen. Bob Dole (R-KS),
the Senate Republican leader, complained that the
phones and faxes keep coming in, saying filibuster,
filibuster.

Dole stated that a filibuster on so-called assault
weapons is not possible because "we don't have the
votes." Since it takes 60 Senators present and
voting to break a filibuster, and 43 Senators voted
against the ban, it would seem that the arithmetic
is in our favor.

Important: tell every Republican Senator to "make
no time agreements." A time agreement gives the
anti-gun crowd what it wants--a certain day and
time when the debate must be over. A time
agreement gives the Republicans no guarantees
that any of their anti-pork amendments will be
adopted. A time agreement would be a victory
for Sarah Brady and Bill Clinton.

Important II: Your Senators and the news media
may be telling you that the Gramm point of
order is something new and unheard of. Actually
according to the Associated Press, the three-
fifths rule has been invoked 33 times since 1993,
27 times by Democrats. Democrats used this
point of order to defeat a motion to eliminate
Bill Clinton's retroactive tax increase. If
it is fair for Democrats to use this motion to
keep a tax increase, it is equally fair for the
Republicans to use it to get the fat out of the
crime bill.
