Bob Barr to Tanya Metaksa Congress of the United States House of Representatives Washington, D.C. 20515 February 10, 1995 Ms. Tanya K. Metaksa Executive Director National Rifle Association/ILA 11250 Waples Mill Road Fairfax, Va 22030 Dear Tanya, I am pleased to announce that earlier today we convened the first meeting of the Firearms Legislation Task Force. As you may know, I have been asked to chair the Task Force under the direction of the Judiciary Subcommittee Chairman, Representative Bill McCollum. Our Task Force includes Representative Roscoe Bartlett (MD-6), Ed Bryant (TN-7), Helen Chenoweth (ID-1), Fred Heineman (NC-4), Steve Stockman (TX-9), and I am pleased to say that all of us were in attendance today, save Helen who was represented by staff. Speaker Gingrich addressed the Task Force and reiterated his clear and strong support. He endorsed efforts to develop a comprehensive strategy and plan that will restore the rights of our citizenry to keep and bear arms, in accordance with the Second Amendment to the Constitution. In so doing, it is our goal to shape the national debate on all aspects of firearms legislation, reflecting where the focus ought to be -- protecting citizens from criminals who use firearms to commit crime -- and where it ought not to be -- restricting the constitutional rights of the law abiding citizens. We are committed to action and will meet again next week. We look forward to including you and others sympathetic to our purpose in developing appropriate proposals for legislation, hearings and oversight. As always, your active participation and counsel will be greatly appreciated. With warmest regards, I am, very truly yours BOB BARR Member of Congress BB:cc
