                  NRA-ILA CALIFORNIA FAX ALERT

                           CALIFORNIA

SB 670 (Lewis): Governor Wilson has signed into law NRA-backed
legislation capping the Dealer Record of Sale (DROS) fee, paid when
purchasing a firearm, at $14. Future increases would be tied to
the Consumer Price Index -- not governmental whims.

The League of California Cities met this week in San Francisco for
their annual convention. The most controversial issue before the
League was a resolution calling for the adoption of the California
Police Chiefs Association (CPCA) position paper on gun control.
This paper makes a number of draconian recommendations including
registration of all firearms, licensing of firearm owners and
confiscation of so called "assault weapons". CPCA representatives
were in attendance and were actively lobbying the League's voting
members. In spite of their efforts, the issue proved to be too
controversial. Cities all over the state had rejected the CPCA
position paper and there was organized opposition on the convention
floor which was led by Council Members Sandy Webb (Simi Valley) and
Mike Robbins (El Segundo). No vote was taken by the full League
membership. However, the resolution was referred back to the
League's Public Safety Committee for amendments and this committee
will meet in January to reconsider this issue. Please let your
City Council representative know of your opposition to this
resolution.

NRA-ILA Dinner: Join NRA Executive Vice President, Wayne LaPierre
and NRA-ILA Executive Director, Tanya Metaksa for the first ever
NRA-ILA Southern California Dinner. This event, held in
conjunction with the Great Western Gun Show, will be at 7 p.m. on
Saturday, November 11, at the L.A. County Fairgrounds. There will
be prize drawings all weekend at the show and a special Grand Prize
drawing for a custom AR-15 rifle. Space is limited, so act now.
For information on tickets, call the Sacramento NRA office at (916)
446-2455.

Contra Costa County: The county Board of Supervisors failed to
pass restrictive ordinances designed to put licensed FFL dealers
out of business. Instead, they voted 4-0 to draft a letter to the
BATF and California DOJ asking them to enforce current law and make
sure all dealers are in compliance. The efforts of the Brentwood
NRA Members' Council, local members and FFL dealers were important
in the defeat of these anti-gun ordinances. This issue may come up
again so stay tuned....
