The amendment exempts private transfers through dealers. Although the City Council's underlying goal is to put an end to the sale of all such firearms, they accepted the amendment in an effort to keep the lawyers at bay, as Counsel for the state legislature has concluded that this ordinance would violate California's state preemption law. The Council will take a final vote on this measure on Tuesday, January 16. We'll keep you posted! PRO-GUN SPEAKER ELECTED: On January 4th, Assemblyman Curt Pringle (R-Garden Grove) was elected as Speaker of the Assembly on a 40-37 vote. Pringle has a long history of support for our Second Amendment rights and can be counted on to advance right to carry in the upcoming legislative session. You can expect major changes in how the Assembly operates as Pringle restructures the system built during the Willie Brown's 14 year reign. Please call Speaker Pringle's office at (714) 638-1393 and offer your congratulations. MOUNTAIN LION INITIATIVE: In 1990, California voters narrowly passed Proposition 117, a ballot initiative which stripped responsibility for managing mountain lions from the Department of Fish & Game and gave mountain lions in California "specially protected mammal" status. A "Yes" vote on Proposition 197 will ensure that the proper balance of public safety and wildlife management is achieved for California's most dangerous predator -- the mountain lion. Become a Proposition 197 volunteer. Call the state-based group Californians for Balanced Wildlife Management directly at (916) 783-8837 for more information on how you can help.
