(CRPA). This is a transcript from a broadcast made on the "It's not about Guns,. . .It's about Freedom" radio show on KIEV 870 A.M. (Glendale, CA). Broadcasted each Tuesday night from 8:30 P.M. to 10:30 P.M. Typing errors are my own. ***********Beginning of Article******* Good evening, this is Gerald Upholt, Manager of Governmental Affairs for the California Rifle and Pistol Association with a "Legislative Watch" report on activities in the State Capitol. **** Today the Assembly Public Safety Committee, led by Republican Paula Boland of Granada Hills, resoundingly defeated a bill by Democratic Assemblyman Louis Caldera from Los Angeles that would have repealed the current state preemption of local firearms laws. Under Mr. Caldera's bill, AB 634, local governments would have been allowed to each enact their own individual firearms laws. Such a system would create total chaos for anyone traveling with a firearm, such as hunters, competitors or recreational shooters. It is easy to visualize the nightmare that would be encountered by someone traveling who passes through a different town every few miles, each with different firearms laws. Besides CRPA and other pro-firearms rights organizations, AB 634 was also opposed by law enforcement, especially the rank and file who patrol the streets daily, because it would be virtually impossible for them to enforce laws that can change from one city block to the next. Both firearms owners and law enforcement agree that there must be statewide uniformity when it comes to firearms laws. This is a major reason why the California Rifle and Pistol Association is suing the city of West Hollywood which has recently enacted its own ban on so-called Saturday Night Specials, in spite of the state law that prohibits them from doing so. Recently, CRPA filed suit against West Hollywood's illegal assault weapon law. As a result, the law was repealed. CRPA believes it is important to stop the illegal proliferation of local firearms laws now, before they become widespread. Currently, Los Angeles, Compton and Huntington Park are known to also be considering illegal local firearms laws. A win in court against West Hollywood will put a stop to illegal local laws everywhere.
