Among the most notable events of the last few days were the resignation of Cypress Republican Doris Allen as Speaker of the Assembly and the election of Fresno Republican Brian Setencich as her successor. Both are very strong defenders of the Second Amendment. Among Speaker Setencich's first actions was the reappointment of Granada Hills republican Paula Boland, as Chairperson of the Public Safety Committee. This is the Committee through which all firearms legislation in the State Assembly must pass. Assembly Member Boland is also a very strong protector of the Second Amendment and was recently honored by the California Rifle and Pistol Association as Assembly Member of the Year at its Annual Membership and Awards Banquet. The final night of the session yielded the passage of SB 670 by Orange County Republican Senator John Lewis. This bill would limit the amount of the firearms purchaser's Dealers Record of Sale fee to its current level of $14.00, although increases equal to the rate of inflation would be authorized, but only if a need for it could be demonstrated. SB 670 is now on the Governor's desk where the State Attorney General is asking for a veto. The California Rifle and Pistol Association is asking for a signature. If signed, the limit on the Dealers Record of Sale fee will become effective January 1, 1996. The Governor has until October 15th to sign or veto legislation sent to him by the closing date of this years session. Please tune in next week for another update on legislative actions in the state capitol.
