To: firearms-politics@hpcuoa.sv.itc.hp.com Subject: Journal of the Medical Association of Georgia Date: Fri, 18 Mar 1994 14:40:50 -0500 From: Preston Wilson While we have seen various medical associations/groups (especially the CDC here in Atlanta) take up positions slandering those who choose to own firearms, my wife, Roberta, found that the editor of the "Journal of the Medical Association of Georgia" (JMAG) is a strong supporter of those who own firearms. After Roberta heard a local news report on an article in the March 1994 issue, she went to library and found all of the articles that pertained to firearms that appeared over that last year in JMAG. The title of the articles and the authors are as follows: "On Guns and Violence"; Miguel A. Faria, Jr., MD; JMAG July 1993, Vol. 82; pp. 318-320 "Guns and Self-Protection"; Gary Kleck; JMAG January 1994, Vol. 83; pp 42 (This article appeared in the Tallahassee Democrat on 11-21-93) "On the Journal's New Look and The Right to Self-Protection"; Miguel A. Faria, Jr., MD; JMAG March 1994, Vol. 83; pp 129-131 "Guns in the Medical Literature - A Failure of Peer Review"; Edgar A. Suter, MD; JMAG March 1994, Vol. 83; pp 133-148 "Health Care and Firearms"; Larry Pratt; JMAG March 1994, Vol. 83; pp 149-152 (Derived from Mr. Pratt's testimony submitted to U.S. Representative Charles Schumer on the Relationship between Health Care and Firearms, Dec. 1993) "The Allure of Foreign Gun Laws"; David B. Kopel, JD; JMAG March 1994, Vol. 83; pp 153-155 "Guns: Health Destroyer or Protector?"; W. W. Caruth, III; JMAG March 1994, Vol. 83; pp 157-159 Dr. Faria is the editor of JMAG and in his editorial in the March 1994 issue he calls for medical professionals to "... consider the issue (gun control) intellectually and dispassionately, considering also the bigger picture - namely, that firearms in the hads of the law-abiding may actually be extremely beneficial for the preservation of a free society." The authors of the other articles are well know by most here (or they should be.) If someone else has already posted information about this, I apologize for the repeat. Due to recent very heavy work load at my job, I've only been able to scan recent articles. -Preston (preston@sware.com)
