Stine" There is a new book out in which many here might be interested: _Lost Rights, The Destruction of American Liberty_ By James Bovard. ISBN 0-312-10351-4 $24.95 from St. Martin's Press. 408 pp. Table of Contents: 1. The New Leviathan 2. Seizure Fever: The War on Property Rights 3. The Proliferation of Petty Dictatorships 4. Politics vs. Contracts 5. Subsidies and Subjugation 6. The Opportunity Police 7. Guns, Drugs, Searches and Snares 8. Taxing and Tyrannizing 9. Spiking Speech, Bankrupting Newspapers, and Jamming Broadcasts 10. Conclusion It has over 50 pages of footnotes and references. This book details the infringment of all rights and has a very detailed exposition of the excesses of the FBI and BATF in all sorts of aspects; Ruby Ridge, Waco and many other incidents are laid out in detail. BATF's excesses in the area of alcohol and tobacco are detailed as well. The excesses of property seizure are laid out in more detail than many of us ever wanted to know. Excellent sources and references on everything. Bovard is, amazingly, a journalist and policy analyst for the big gamut of back-east left-wing press: NYT, Washington Post, Newsweek, New Republic, Wall St. Journal and Reader's Digest. ObGuns: One classic quote from the book on the topic of gun control: "Even liberal law professors have recently begun to concede -- with embarrassment -- that the Second Amendment actually does guarantee the people's right to own guns." His research on gun issues is spot-on. All the stuff that we talk about on these lists, Kleck, Levinson, HCI's duplicity, the fallacy of "assault weapons", registration -> confiscation in NJ/NY, you name it, it is ALL here. All of it. Footnoted, referenced, and very tightly written. In about 10 pages, he hits everything. Another 4 pages of Waco and 3 more for Ruby Ridge. References and sources. Jeff: I'd highly recommend this book as an addition to Project Opinion Leader. Peter: This book's section on search/seizure, the tricks police use to gain false consent, back-door control, etc. sound as though you wrote it. dsa To: "David S.A.
