We expect that Senator Mitchell will take up the Crime Bill as soon as it reaches the Senate. When the moderate Republicans decided to negotiate away their advantage, a bi-partisan group of 55 Democrats and the rest of the Republicans attempted to put together a Brewster-Hunter substitute. Unfortunately the motion to recommit with the Brewster bill failed by a vote of 197-232. The final vote on the Crime Bill was 234-195. The bill now moves to the Senate where there will be a point of order lodged against it by several Republican Senators. We intend to work closely with those Senators to try and block the passage of this bill. It is important that everyone call or fax their US Senators to vote against the Crime Bill. The Senate main phone number is 202-224-3121. More information will follow on Monday August 22, 1994.
