I suspect that we'll have more to talk about in the coming weeks -- unfortunately. There's been My mailbox overfloweth. I've put some filters in place to manage the load a little more effectively. If I respond a little slowly, please bear with me. ======================================================================== House Crime Bill Vote Looms April 8 update -- With Congress on Spring Break, it's been quiet on Capitol Hill this week -- but they will dive into the crime bill and probably a vote on some kind of Feinstein-like semi- auto ban during the next two weeks. Those votes would have come more quickly if the Rules Committee had been able to hammer out an agreement as to what amendments would be in order on the crime bill. They were supposed to have met during the recess, but haven't. We hear that the White House has objected to such a quick vote on so-called "assault weapons." Maybe that means they don't think they have the votes. I'd suggest a call to your representative to see that their counts are correct. Both the White House and Handgun Control Inc. want to delay it until after the television network blitz the week of April 25. A senior vice president of CBS Television told the U.S. Conference of Mayors in January that they were negotiating with their three competitors, trying to get all networks to simultaneously run a program demanding more gun laws. He said Fox Network had agreed to the simulcast. If the networks were even discussing such collusion in other areas, the newspapers and public would be condemning it for the propaganda operation it clearly is. NBC had a program this week talking about the rise in armed crime in England, and saying unarmed Bobbies would soon be a thing of the past. They said that despite England's restrictive gun laws the crooks had no trouble getting guns, which they said were being smuggled in from Europe. ======================================================================== Roberti Recall Vote on Tuesday Both CBS and McNeill-Lehrer had features this week on next Tuesday's recall election of Sen. David Roberti -- an effort spearheaded by gunowners. Like Roberti, CBS made it appear that the sole issue was his co-sponsorship of the Roberti-Roos ban on so-called "assault weapons." Neither want to talk about his record, or his cozy ties to corruption. But I loved it when CBS let Roberti moan about how gun owners never forgive or forget. Roberti said other politicians wouldn't have the financial resources to withstand such an attack -- and he said it while being driven around in a limousine. If you'd like to help in that effort, write a check to "Roberti Recall," send it to me and I'll get it to the right folks. ======================================================================== Knox on NPR's Fresh Air I was on National Public Radio's Fresh Air program yesterday, and was much disappointed. They let me state my opinions, but virtually all the evidence that supports those opinions was cut out of the interview. My comments on the failure of gun laws; the fact that D.C.'s gun ban had created a safe work environment for criminals; the Justice Department-funded research by Dr. James Wright; the work by Dr. Gary Kleck showing that guns are more often used to stop criminals than to aid criminals; the reduction of crime in Florida after law-abiding citizens were allowed to carry guns, and the total of 17 licenses revoked for gun offenses -- out of 284,000 issued; the fact that by existing law every able-bodied private citizen is a member of the militia; that the first Senate defeated an amendment to the Second Amendment which would have limited the right to keep and bear arms to the common defense. All those comments, and much more, were left on the cutting room floor. That's why you seldom hear spokesmen for gunowners make the points you would like to hear them make. And that's why I infinitely prefer live radio; I may step on my tongue, but at least I don't have to worry about some editor cutting it off. ======================================================================== -##- Retain Neal Knox Associates as your lobbyist and begin receiving the bi-monthly "Hard Corps Report" by contributing to the Firearms Coalition, Box 6537, Silver Spring, MD 20916.
