There appears to be no deal as yet, since there are still issues outstanding. Those issues include the assault weapons ban, how the cuts are to be made, the Molinari rape trials amendment, and the retroactive release of many drug offenders. GOA would not be surprised to see an agreement as of 10:00 AM tomorrow (Saturday) not on the merits, but because Congress wants to go home. The GOP has already waived what we understand to be a two-thirds rule relating to how the bill could be considered in a single day. Interestingly enough, your many calls have resulted in both Senator Phil Gramm (a generally solid pro-gunner) and Senator Bob Dole (a good sense of which way the wind is blowing) to state that they would oppose the crime bill even if modified. GOA will be reminding them of that promise. It is possible, though not likely, that the negotiations will extend beyond the 10:00 AM goal for an agreement. Many House offices will be fully staffed tomorrow, with little to do but answer your calls. Calls to Newt (opposed to the bill but will allow some GOP members to vote for the rule) Gingrich at (202) 225-4501 are important. So are calls to Peter ("it's key for all of us to see a crime bill passed this year") Torkildsen (R-MA) at (202) 225-8020, fax to (202) 225-8037. And it is worth letting Rep. Mike Castle (R-DE) know how you feel about his leading the "let's make a deal" crowd in these negotiations at (202) 225-4165, fax to (202) 225-2291. Castle's troops may well be the key to a big victory for Bill Clinton. The calls are working. Remember that no one expected our side to win last week. You have made the difference. Please keep up the good work. And remember, long distance calls are much cheaper on Saturday. Any Congressman can be reached at (202) 225-3121. You have turned a Clinton walk away into pure trench warfare. Every day's delay makes victory more likely. Word is that if the House passes the crime bill on Saturday, the Senate will take it up next week. If we can get through Saturday, we may well put off the bill until September. And that means roughly 30 days left in this terrible Congress. Write. Call. Fax. And Win!
