The computer (lex-luthor.ai.mit.edu) that has provided White House documents on a daily basis for the last two years will be decommissioned next week. To continue uninterrupted receipt of White House Documents, you need to resubscribe to the new distribution system for White House Documents. [See the instructions below.] We are running a subscriber survey; if you'd like to participate, the appropriate form can be obtained by following the instructions below. Your response to the survey will help us understand how usage of this service has changed over the past year. The new publications system (Publications@Research.ai.mit.edu) has been designed to serve as the primary distribution hub for White House Electronic Publications. It runs on more modern hardware and builds on a much better foundation for email and world wide web service. Although there are some observable differences from the old system, the general means of subscribing and retrieving documents remain largely the same. The new server offers a richer variety of subscription categories that allow you to tune receipt of documents to your interests. A predefined set of subscriptions are available, but you may also make your own custom subscriptions with the advanced subscription tools. Redistributors or archivists of these documents will find facilities for subscribing your own mailing list to the publications stream. If you use these "mail agent" facilities, your subscription can be more effectively maintained. Because each "mail agent" has associated with it maintainer addresses, because we can contact someone in the event of technical problems with the subscription (e.g., delivery failures). During the change over to the new system, if you experience technical difficulties or encounter unclear documentation, please report the problem to us by sending email to: Bug-Publications@Research.AI.MIT.EDU Sincerely, John Mallery Intelligent Information Infrastructure Project Artificial Intelligence Laboratory Massachusetts Institute of Technology WWW: http://www.ai.mit.edu/projects/iiip/home-page.html ------------------------------------------------------------------------ INSTRUCTIONS 1. The subscription form for the new server can be obtained by sending a message: To: Publications@Research.ai.mit.edu Subject: Help 2. More detailed instructions (attached below) on the use of the new server are available by sending: (This information is attached below) To: Publications@research.ai.mit.edu Subject: ? 3. World Wide Web access to White House Documents is available at: http://whitehouse.gov/ Many facilities available over the publications email server are also available over the web. The web interface can be particularly helpful if you are formulating a custom subscription. After looking at the user-friendly version of the taxonomy of distribution categories, you can formulate queries and test them to see what past documents they retrieve. This will give you an indication of what future documents would be received through a custom subscription based on the query. 4. Information on other sources for White House Documents can be obtained by sending: To: Publications@research.ai.mit.edu Subject: Send FAQ ------------------------------------------------------------------------ OVERVIEW OF SUBJECT LINE COMMANDS Subject line commands work by reading the subject line of the incoming message and taking whatever action that line calls for. If you want to sign up to automatically receive press releases, then your subject line would begin with the word RECEIVE. You can then specify what kind of information you are interested in receiving. So, if you wanted to sign up to get releases related to the economy your email message would look like this: To: Publications@Research.AI.MIT.EDU Subject: RECEIVE ECONOMY When you send a signup message to the Publications server, it sends you back a status message letting you know what distribution streams you are signed up for. If you ever want to check on what groups you are signed up for send the following message: To: Publications@Research.AI.MIT.EDU Subject: SEND STATUS You can stop receiving email releases by sending a CANCEL message to the Publications server. The word CANCEL would be followed by whatever distribution stream you wanted to drop. If you wanted to stop receiving message about the ECONOMY then your mail would look like this: To: Publications@Research.AI.MIT.EDU Subject: CANCEL ECONOMY To be dropped from a specific distribution group, you could substitute for ECONOMY in the above message any of a variety of options described below, including SOCIAL, FOREIGN, HEALTH, SPEECHES, NEWS or ALL. If you send the subject line CANCEL ALL, then you will be taken off the email distribution system all together and will not receive further releases of any kind. You can also ask for help from the automated server. Send an email query as follows: To: Publications@Research.AI.MIT.EDU Subject: HELP The server will respond by sending you a detailed form that will guide you through the process of signing up for the various distribution streams. As you will quickly discover, there is a automatic form processing interface that parallels the quick and easy subject line commands discussed here. More detailed help is available by sending an email query as follows: To: Publications@Research.AI.MIT.EDU Subject: SEND HELP Finally, if you want to search and retrieve documents, you can do this via email through the Publications server. You can obtain the WAIS query form by sending an email query as follows: To: Publications@Research.AI.MIT.EDU Subject: SEND WAIS Once you have identified the documents that you want, be careful not to request them all at once, because you may be sent a message containing all the documents and this message may be too big for some mail delivery systems between the email server and you.
