Stine" Here's the start... there's a second part to this I'll post this eve. I wrote 14 letters on hard-copy yesterday, will be writing more tonight, and that's just on the CA state issues. The BB letters have to go out by Friday night to our estimed slime in Washingtoon. Remeber that the hearings on the BB start on the 8th of this month, so you should have your first round of letters in by this weekend... if you can use the email addresses, so much the better. The volume of SnailMail they must be getting may be high, and they're probably looking to "justify" this new email toy they have. Of course, DiFi and Barbara Bouncer don't have email. And don't give out their FAX numbers. Typical egalitarian pap. Maybe a letter wrapped around a brick... dsa ------- Forwarded Message From: mgiwer@f326.n3603.z1.FIDONET.ORG (Matt Giwer) Newsgroups: alt.politics.clinton Subject: Congress gets e-mail 1 Message-ID: <2506.2C84C498@mechanic.fidonet.org> Date: Tue, 31 Aug 93 22:10:00 PDT Organization: FidoNet node 1:3603/326 - SPPE, St Petersburg FL Lines: 91 * Forwarded by MATT GIWER from the Main Board conference. * Original from BILL BLOMGREN to ALL on 08-31-93. Currently, seven Members of the U.S. House of Representatives have been assigned public electronic mailboxes that may be accessed by their constituents. This effort represents a pilot program that will be used to assess the impact of electronic mail on Congressional offices and their mission of serving the residents of a Congressional District. This initial project will be expanded to other Members of Congress, as technical, budgetary and staffing constraints allow. Please review the list of participating Representatives below, and if the Congressional District in which you reside is listed, follow the instructions below to begin communicating by electronic mail with your Representative. If your Representative is not yet on-line, please be patient. U.S. REPRESENTATIVES PARTICIPATING IN THE CONSTITUENT ELECTRONIC MAIL SYSTEM Hon. Currently, nine Members of the U.S. House of Representatives have been assigned public electronic mailboxes that may be accessed by their constituents. The results of the six month public mail pilot have been very encouraging. The nature and character of the incoming electronic mail has demonstrated that this capability will be an invaluable source of information on constituent opinion. We are now in the process of expanding the project to other Members of Congress, as technical, budgetary and staffing constraints allow. However, if your Representative is taking part in the project, we request that you send a letter or postcard by U.S. Mail to that Representative at the address listed above with your name and internet address, followed by your postal (geographical) address. The primary goal of this program is to allow Members to better serve their CONSTITUENTS, and this postal contact is the only sure method currently available of verifying that a user is a resident of a particular congressional district. In addition, constituents who communicate with their Representative by electronic mail should be aware that Members will sometimes respond to their messages by way of the U.S. Postal Service. This method of reply will help to ensure confidentiality, a concern that is of utmost importance to the House of Representatives. COMMENTS AND SUGGESTIONS Please feel free to send electronic mail comments about our new service to the Congressional Comment Desk, at COMMENTS@HR.HOUSE.GOV We will make every effort to integrate suggestions into forthcoming updates of our system. ---- -------------------- Standard DISCLAIMER Applied. -------------------- Date: Mon, 14 Mar 1994 16:17:46 -0800 From: Jeff Chan To: ca-firearms, firearms-politics@cup.hp.com Subject: Re: Congress Critters List - Electronic Format >Subject: Congress Critters List - Electronic Format > >Does anyone have this list? ---- [From my anonymous source in DC:] In regards to Lance's inquiry, "Congress Critters List - Electronic Format Does anyone have this list?" I assume he is talking about E-Mail addresses. If so, you can relay the fact that only about 13 Members of Congress currently have the ability to respond to *legislative* E-Mail from constituents. Yes, many of us have access to the Internet. However, this access is less than 6 months old on the House side. Very few people here know what the Internet is, let alone what it is capable of doing. They see it as a another thing to create more work for themselves, when the contrary is probably true. However, it will involve staff re-structuring and finding a way for us to merge WordPerfect documents into E-Mail responses (many Hill systems now can only merge in WP 5.0 UUENCODEd (huh?) format). Security concerns are also causing big delays. The people who do use it (myself included) use it for primarily personal business as a means to get familiar with its capabilities and limitations. We will be way ahead of the game once the Internet really catches on. I just convinced my boss to establish a LISTSERV and Gopher service through a university in our district (both are online now). For your information, below are the 13 E-Mail addresses for the Congresspeople who are beta sites for constituent E-Mail. This is not a blow off! Most Members of Congress will be going to this system once they realized what it is all about. We are just a little behind in technology, as usual.
