From: WIENER.GCS@pc.gcs.litton.com (WIENER, DAN WH:3708) To: firearms-alert@shell.portal.com (wiener) Subject: CA: More on SB933 Date: Mon, 26 Jun 95 16:09 This is getting tiresome, but SB933 (the bill to ban Saturday Night Specials and many/most other handguns) is scheduled for another vote in the California Assembly's Public Safety Committee on Tuesday, June 27th. Last time it was bottled up on a 4-4 party- line vote. Since that time Chairwoman Paula Boland has been kicked off the committee by "Republican" Assembly Speaker Doris Allen, as part of the bitter bloodletting. But it still requires five votes to get a bill out of committee. There may not actually be a vote on Tuesday, since Republicans are planning to boycott the committee meeting and prevent a quorum. If there is a vote, there is considerable concern that Richard Rainey (the Republican from Walnut Creek) may squish. I called his office and was told categorically that Rainey will vote "No" on SB933, so that's encouraging. But on the other hand I keep hearing rumors that Rainey will cut a deal. This possibility is bolstered by Rainey's remarks after the last vote (as quoted in the Los Angeles Times): He was not nearly as concerned about banning Saturday Night Specials as he was with the fact that the current language would even outlaw his own gun (he was in law enforcement for 30 years). The other question mark is why the proponents of SB933 would ask for reconsideration at this time unless they had worked out a backroom compromise and had the votes in hand. So it may be useful again to call Rainey's office in Sacramento (916-445-6161) or Walnut Creek (510-933-9196), or fax his office (916-327-5297), and urge him to remain firm. -- Dan Wiener (wiener@pc.gcs.litton.com or dpwiener@aol.com)
