From: coxb@netcom.com (Brian Cox) Subject: Pasadena ordinance To: firearms-alert@shell.portal.com Date: Tue, 28 Feb 1995 02:20:41 -0800 (PST) The Pasadena ammunition registration ordinance passed. A large turnout of typical liberals from the Coalition For a Non-violent City showed up for the meeting, but an ever larger crowd of guns rights supporters showed up. In the end though, the council had basically made up their minds already, as battle lines were drawn at 9 PM and changed little over the course of the night. Despite several attempts by council members, the police chief never did give an example of how the ordinance, which would require all ammunition sales in Pasadena to be recorded by name, address, employer, a thumbprint, and a great deal of other information, would do anything to stop crime. The one time he mentioned that "for someone who was considering a crime, perhaps knowing their name was being recorded would stop them", the laughter was rather loud. The tragedy was, I saw a great many people in the audience who were nodding in agreement as well-- they actually believed this crap! The matter of the 18 year federal law of the same substance was brought up several times. One thing that did become painfully obvious though was that only 1-2 members of the council knew even the slightest bit of information about guns. The police chief himself sugggested that the ordinance would cover all ammunition when it specifically covers only handgun ammo. The city attorney, in defining ammunition, said that it was "designed to propel a bullet by means of an explosion", and then continued to say that the definition was limited so as to exclude rifle ammunition! Rifle ammunition isn't ammunition by this definition? In any case, we lost this particular battle, but it will come up for review in 12 months. One of our enemies on the council actually put that particular clause in, wanting to evaluate its actual crime fighting effectiveness. We all know how short a speech that will be, and I'm looking forward to how well the police chief lies to defend it in a year. Something did strike me as interesting during the meeting. There was a tremendous sense of "we have to do something, even if it won't actually solve anything." I'm wondering if that can be used to promote things like CCW under the same guise. Just a thought. -- Brian D Cox | It is a conspiracy, the government | Finger for coxb@netcom.com | blanked out this space. | PGP public key __ To: firearms-alert@shell.portal.com Subject: Pasadena Ammo Ordinance Passed Comming Soon to a town near You Date: Tue, 28 Feb 1995 07:23:28 PST From: John Walker Of particular note, The Police Chiefs of Glendale and Azuza stood side by side with Pasadena Chief Oliver and said that they were going to bring a similar ordinance before their respective city councils soon. ALSO, Los Angeles City Councilman Marin Broudy (Sp??) mentioned how he will push a similar ordinance through the Los Angeles City Council. There were many "QUOTABLE QUOTES" from the supporters of the ordinance. As soon as I've been able to record and disect the meeting, I'll post some. Enjoy. John W.
