Associated Press is reporting August 18, 1999 that Attorney 
General Lockyer plans to drop former AG Lungren's appeal 
over 1,600 late-registered so-called "assault weapons" and 
ask the legislature to approve funds to compensate owners 
who surrender them.  I confirmed this with the AG's 
spokesman Nathan Barankin on August 18th.  

I also asked what plans they have for late registrees who
do not voluntarily turn them in.
