From: WIENER.GCS@pc.gcs.litton.com (WIENER, DAN WH:3708) To: firearms-alert@shell.portal.com (wiener) Subject: CA: CPCA repudiation Date: Tue, 27 Jun 95 12:31 Monday night (June 26th) the Simi Valley City Council voted unanimously to repudiate both the California Police Chiefs Association's pro-gun-control position paper and the League of California Cities for endorsing it. About three dozen people from the new NRA Members Council of East Ventura County attended the meeting to voice their views (only about a dozen spoke, to avoid overkill). There was no opposition from the anti-self-defense side. All the council members responding by slamming the report, and by agreeing to send the letter below. The letter is a watered- down version of the one originally submitted by Sandi Webb, but it still gets the message across. Board of Directors League of California Cities 1400 K Street Sacramento, CA 95814 Dear Members of the Board: The City of Simi Valley recently received a report forwarded by you from the California Police Chiefs Association. Your letter stated that the League of California Cities Board of Directors had adopted and endorsed this report, titled "Confronting the American Tragedy: The Need to Better Regulate Firearms." Your letter further stated that this will be used by League policy committees as a guide for evaluating future legislation related to the regulation of firearms. After careful consideration our City Council has come to a very different conclusion. We consider this report to be highly flawed and the League's involvment counterproductive to a cooperative intergovernmental process. We are equally disappointed that the League of California Cities Board of Directors has mistakenly chosen to adopt and endorse this report. This is an issue of general concern for all Californians, not one specific to cities, and therefore not one on which it is appropriate for the League of California Cities to express such a position. The City Council of the City of Simi Valley believes it is essential that you reconsider your decision, and withdraw your endorsement of the California Police Chiefs Association's report. Sincerely yours, Greg Stratton Mayor
