From: Sarah Thompson Subject: MEDIA: Sarah Brady in Ann Landers To: firearms-alert@shell.portal.com Date: Wed, 14 Jun 1995 17:56:03 -0600 (MDT) In today's Anne Landers column (6/14) there is a featured letter from Sarah Brady of HCI. The topic is children and guns and, as usual for HCI, is full of disinformation. It recommends removing all guns from the home as the BEST method of preventing accidents and makes no mention of either firarms safety training or the Eddie Eagle program. I realize that Anne Landers is hardly a scholarly forum, but it IS more widely read than just about anything else in the paper. Please write to Anne Landers, c/o your local newspaper, requesting that she present the FACTS, and provide for oppposing viewpoints. Ignorance does NOT promote safety; firearms safety training does. If enough of us deluge her with letters, perhaps we'll be able to reach her very large audience. Thanks! Don't expect honesty or sense from her. She still occasionally prints the Kellerman lies in her articles. Rick At, but not for, NOVaSTOR __ From: Sarah Thompson Subject: Re: Ann Landers and HCI To: chan@shell.portal.com Date: Wed, 14 Jun 1995 23:13:35 -0600 (MDT) Dear fellow supporters of gun rights: Since I posted my note on Anne Landers and Sarah Brady, I have received innumerable posts saying that Anne is a member of HCI and writing to her would be a waste of time. I'm well aware of Ms. Landers's stance on guns. However, my point is that a huge VOLUME of letters that are polite and present documented evidence that HCI is wrong just might get a response. Regardless of her politics, it has always seemed to me that Ms. Landers recognizes her responsibility to present accurate information to her readers, and even if she prints something along with more HCI disinformation we've accomplished something. Our rights are worth fighting for. I'm sure the framers of the Constitution were told that a revolution against England was a waste of time and lives. The leaders of the civil rights movement were told their cause was hopeless. You get the idea. Now is not the time to decide things are hopeless or to give up. The tide is clearly turning in our direction. Writing a letter takes no longer than cleaning your gun, and costs no more to mail than a few bullets. The pen is mightier than the sword - or the assault weapon! Sarah righter@intele.net __ Try a fax board sometime.... :-) Sarah is of course right. The ENTIRE purpose of political ads, education, letters to the editor, calls to talk radio, etc is to sway the UNDECIDED. Newspaper letters definitely do that, so keep writing. You won't convert hard core antis any more than they will convert us. Aim your letters to reach the middle ground.
