Bill Scott] NRA - ILA CALIFORNIA SUMMER CONFERENCE -- AUGUST 26, 1995, at the Red Lion Hotel, Modesto, Ca. The Summer Conference: Raising our level of proficiency at running our Members' Councils, evaluating candidates, helping elect candidates who will support the 2nd Amendment are all important goals. This conference was conceived for that very purpose. The conference committee selected topics for workshops that would provide fundamental skills, techniques and information to aid Council officers and members in achieving these goals. Who Should Attend: Current officers, committee chairs, members who need to be prepared to move into new assignments, members going into leadership roles for the first time. WORKSHOP DESCRIPTIONS Evaluating Candidates: The techniques and tools to research a candidate's position on key issues, interviewing them and evaluating their overall record. Media Relations: Developing a public relations plan, establishing a relationship with the media and handling the ongoing interaction with them. Campaign Relations: How to effectively work to support the candidate of your choice; conducting telephone banks, precinct walks and other election-time techniques. Officers Training: Understanding the duties of each of the elected positions in your Members' Council, and the leadership of the organization necessary to fulfill those duties. Fundraising: How to finance your Members' Council activities through a variety of fundraising programs. Communications: Using computers, newsletters, telephone trees, mail outs, newspapers, etc. to reach members and potential members. Making Presentations: The key elements to prepare and deliver effective presentations to members, service clubs and other public forums. Conducting Meetings: Monthly meetings for members and guests must be well planned, informative and entertaining; this "how to" is vital. Membership Development: Building membership is vital to the health and effectiveness of any volunteer organization. Our members are our strength. Coalition Building: Other groups can help us ... and we can help them: forging relationships for strength. Operating NRA Booths: Much of our public outreach is done from a booth ...this is about doing it well.
